The Italic Revolt

Breaks away: Italics from Rome, or whoever holds the eight towns at the time

Eight towns of central and southern Italy rise up and form a new faction, the Italics. It can only happen from turn 120 (241 BC), after the Gracchan reform, once the Roman factions have built enough colonies. The Italics are at war with Rome from the moment they appear.

It can happen in any campaign, whoever the player is.

What sets it off

  • From turn 120 (241 BC) onwards, once the Gracchan reform has taken place, the game counts the colony buildings (of either level) in every settlement held by Rome, the two Roman rebel factions and the Roman Senate, anywhere on the map; if there are at least 20, there is a 35% chance of the revolt, rolled at the end of every faction's turn.

What happens

  • Corfinium, Teate, Asculum, Bovianum, Venusia, Canusium, Grumentum and Larinum rebel at the start of the next turn, whoever owns them.
  • All eight pass to the new Italics faction, each with a strong garrison of Italic Skirmishers, Italic Cohort and Italic Equites.
  • When Corfinium goes over, the Italics receive 10,000 denarii.
  • At the start of the next round the Italics declare war on Rome and on the Roman factions that can break away from it in its civil wars.
  • The Italics stay at war with all of these: if they are ever at peace with one of them, they declare war again at the start of their turn.
  • The revolt happens only once per campaign.
