Saffron Merchant

Effects: +10 Trading

This man is selling saffron, the fabric of the Gods. The stigma of the crocus or krokos flower produces a strong, yellow colour which can be added to clothes or food. Dionysios is known to wear a saffron garment, and so did the young Herakles and Jason. The poet says that a salesman can demand any price imaginable for saffron, for it is only produced in small numbers from plants in Persia, Babylonia and the famous Korykian cave in Cilicia, where the flowers grow on the banks of a river of the purest water which empties beneath the earth. Another, much smaller Korykian cave is located in Aitolia.

Satrapes tes Aigyptou

never for 17 of the cultures.

Effects: +1 Law, +2 Influence, +1 Management

This man has been appointed as the Satrap of Egypt.\nThe Ptolemies trouble us no more! The lands of Egypt rival those of Babylonia in their riches and our Empire will benefit enormously from farming and trade. In Alexandria we have the biggest port in the eastern Mediterranean and the greatest learning centre in the world. But as we marvel at the plethora of riches of the Lower Egyptian nomes, let us not neglect those of the Upper Egypt! The native priesthood still holds immense influence in those distant regions, so we must be wary and maintain good relations with them if we are to rule this land.

Satrapes tes Babylonias

never for 17 of the cultures.

Effects: +2 Trading, +2 Influence

This man has been appointed as the Satrap of Babylonia, the seat of power after Alexander's conquest of the Persian Empire and during the Seleucids. \nIt is told that Chaldean astrologers prophesied to Antigonus that Seleucus would become master of Asia and would kill Antigonus, which came true in 301 BC, at the battle of Ipsus. Babylon was soon left in the shadow of Seleucia, and the story goes that Antiochus, the son of Seleucus, moved the whole population of Babylon to his father's namesake capital in 275 BC.

Effects: +1 Law, +1 Influence

This man has been appointed as the Satrap of Media, which, after the death of Alexander, was Media divided into two parts: Media Magna (the land around Ecbatana and Rhagae) and Media Atropatene (Gazaca). Media was surrounded by Greek towns in pursuance of Alexander's plan to protect it from neighbouring barbarians, according to Polybius, and only Ekbatana retained its old character. Rhagai became the Greek town Europus; and with it Strabo names Laodicea, Apamea Heraclea and Achais. Most of them were founded by Seleucus I and his son Antiochus I, who settled a number of incoming Greek settlers in the newly established military colonies. Media, famous for its herds of prized Nisean horses, became an important manpower pool of katoikoi for the Seleucids, while also being of a strategic importance for its location on the eastern trade route to India.

never for 17 of the cultures.

Effects: -2 Unrest, +1 Influence

This man has been appointed as the Satrap of Persia, the home of many Persian kings, and from where Cyrus began the conquest which resulted in formation of the Achaemenid Empire. The Persians ruled this area until the campaign of Alexander, and it was Seleucus next who established his rule over Persia (and all the eastern domains) around 305 BC. The Persian population still remains difficult to govern and it is the duty of our trusted satraps to maintain peace and order there. As we populate the coast with Greek settlers to increase our control over the region, the interior is left under the administration of loyal fratarakas, which ensures stability in this otherwise unsympathetic native environment.

Effects: +1 Law, +2 Trading, +1 Influence

This man has been appointed as the Satrap of Susiane.\nSusa was the capital of the Persian Empire along with Persepolis, Pasargadae and Ecbatana when Alexander conquered it. Her role somewhat diminished under the Seleucid rule, but the strategic location on the crossroads of trading routes between Babylonia and Media, Arabia and India meant her importance remained great, and we invest large resources and energy into maintaining and expanding trade to distant lands. One proof of her continued importance is in the fact that the city was renamed Seleukeia during the dominance of the dynasty. Under our rule, trade continues unabated and our treasuries are filled to the brim. The people are content, but be wary of looking at the local temples for plunder in times of need!

This man has been appointed as the Satrap of Syria, where Seleucus established a number of cities (Seleucia, Antiocheia and Laodikeia to name a few) in order to invite Greek settlers into his Empire. The plan worked and in a few decades, Antioch became the capital of the Empire, numbering up to 400,000 people at one time, only matched by Rome, Alexandria, Seleucia and Carthage.
