Ecclesia (Greek Government Ecclesia)

Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · never on 16 of the cultures.

Effects: no stat effects

This man is a member of the Assembly as a citizen. Sometimes called the 'Ecclesia', the central events of the Athenian democracy were the meetings of the assembly. Unlike a parliament, the assembly's members were not elected, but attended by right when they chose. Greek democracy created at Athens was a direct, not a representative democracy: any adult male citizen of age could take part, and it was a duty to do so. The officials of the democracy were in part elected by the Assembly and in large part chosen by lot.\n\nThe assembly had four main functions; it made executive pronouncements (decrees, such as deciding to go to war or granting citizenship to a foreigner); it elected some officials; it legislated; and it tried political crimes. As the system evolved these last two functions were shifted to the law courts. The standard format was that of speakers making speeches for and against a position followed by a general vote (usually by show of hands) of yes or no. Though there might be blocs of opinion, sometimes enduring, on crucial issues, there were no political parties and likewise no government or opposition. Voting was by simple majority. In the 5th century at least there were scarcely any limits on the power exercised by the assembly. If the assembly broke the law, the only thing that might happen is that it would punish those who had made the proposal that it had agreed to. If a mistake had been made, from the assembly's viewpoint it could only be because it had been misled.\n\nAsemblies were present in most Greek cities and city-states, with various amounts of power. The Assembly of Macedon was dissolved after Macedon's defeat at the hands of the Romans.

Elder: This man belongs to the Carthaginian senate (Roshim), the aristocratic institution that is in charge of both domestic (legislation and regulation of finances) and foreign policy (receiving ambassadors, ordering the recruitment of armies and sending directions and orders to the generals in times of war).\nThe senate is presided over by the suffetes and composed of hundreds of elders, but the real core that controls the institution is the permanent internal Sacred Council, formed by thirty individuals with broad powers.

Renowned Elder: Thanks to the political support, money, power and influence gathered by this man and his allies, he is now one of the most important and influential Elders of the Carthaginian senate. By holding this political position, it will be easier for him to achieve military commands and governorship over the many Carthaginian cities and regions.

As a Plutocrat, he wields power that can change many aspects of the lower classes at will with his wealth and political connections, but people usually don't really know much about who the Plutocrats are, as they mainly wield power from the backstage.

What the game says at each level

Eligible For Feasting: Having finally proven himself worthy, this man has completed the sacred rites and is now eligible to sit among his kinsmen in the grand feast. Feasts, after all, are where the real politics happen, with individuals and groups negotiating relationships, pursuing economic or political goals and competing for power, all over roast meat and mead! \nThe hierarchy is strict, with four levels, or circles: the third circle (lowest), the second circle (free warriors), the premier circle (aristocrats or retainers of a chief), and the feast organizers themselves (chiefs or other highly influential aristocrats).

Third Circle: This man has earned the right to sit within the lowest circle of the feast. Though his portion of roast meat may be meagre, and the measure of drink is hardly enough to quaff, he has nevertheless earned the right to sit within the circles of power. With a bit of luck and skill, he might rise beyond the shadows of the Third Circle. In time his reputation and renown may grow, and with it his portions!

Second Circle: This man belongs to the second circle within the feasting hierarchy. Here the hearth fire burns brighter, lighting the path this man seeks to walk. Like the drink which fills this man's horn, the aroma of ever greater influence is heady. Respected though he may be, his thirst for higher standing is not yet sated, and so this man looks to the hearth with a burning ambition, knowing that true power lies beyond his current seat.

Premier Circle: Few men are deemed worthy to sit in the premier circle of the feast, where the meat is tender and the wine flows freely, but this man is one of them. His is a place reserved only for those of the bluest blood, or the most trusted of blades. By their leader they sit, prime slices of meat and horns awash with drink before them. It is they who have the ear of their leader, it is their word which carries greater weight than the gold of lesser men.

Feast Organizer: This man does not partake of the feast, he commands it. Like the hearth which burns bright beneath his gaze, his is an ambition which could not be doused. The flames cast shadows upon the walls of the hall, but it is in his shadow that all men must walk. Whether it be pork, beef, beer or wine upon which his kinsmen sup, all know that the stores it comes from are the stores of this man, and it is by his decree that they have gathered to share in the fruits of the land.

What the game says at each level

Encourages Local Culture: This man started encouraging the local culture of the region he is governing. Under his rule, freedom of cult is granted, and natives can be found in positions of high prestige, albeit not frequently. Such a decision is part of a rational policy of the ruling class, aimed at controlling the most troubled subjugated regions where our culture has not yet fully inserted in the locals.

Embraces Local Culture: This man has fully embraced the local culture: he funds festivals and local cults, and encourages the men in his retinue to marry indigenous women to strengthen the ties between the natives and the ruling class. He even dresses in local fashion in public circumstances. His actions may look suspicious to some, but he swears it’s all part of his strategy, one that involves a lot of drinking and dancing, apparently.

What the game says at each level

Ephebian: The ephebus or ephebos (singular), ephebi (plural); "one approaching manhood". Among the Greeks, a young citizen from eighteen to twenty years of age, during which he was occupied chiefly with garrison (military) duty. The process, called 'Epheban' means literally in Greek: epi- "at, upon" plus hebe- "early manhood". One source suggests that in ancient Athens (335 B.C.), an ephebe was a young citizen undergoing physical and military training. To be a citizen, it was necessary that every legitimate son of Athenian parentage who had reached the age of eighteen had to be enrolled in an ephebic college and undergo its two year course of rigorous training in military and civic duties and activities. For RS2, this is used as a model for Greek states other than the Spartans. Because of RTW limitations, this process is completed when a young man comes of age.\nIn states other than Sparta, the purpose of education was to produce citizens trained in the arts, and to prepare citizens for both peace and war.

Ephor: This man has been elected to the ephorate of Sparta. The ephorate of Sparta consisted of five Spartiate "Overseers", selected annually by the Assembly (Ecclesia). Any Spartiate could be a Ephor. They had financial, judicial, and administrative powers--even over the Kings and Gerontes. Two Ephors always went with a king on campaign to control arrogance and to protect the interests of the whole State. They also managed a kind of 'Secret Service' called the Krypteia.\n\nAccording to Plutarch, every autumn, the ephors would 'pro forma' declare war on the helot population so that any Spartan citizen could kill a helot without fear of blood guilt.\n\nThe Ephors did not have to kneel down before the Kings of Sparta and were highly regarded by the citizens, because of the importance of their powers, and because of the holy role they earned throughout their functions. Cleomenes III abolished the ephors in 227 BC, but they were restored by the Macedonian king Antigonus III Doson after the Battle of Sellasia. The position existed into the 2nd century AD when it was probably abolished by the Roman Emperor Hadrian.

Whether through eccentricity or genuine madness, 'Epimanes' (The Mad) has earned his title in spectacular fashion. He may charge an enemy alone or demand his troops attack the sea to confuse the gods of war. While his unpredictability unnerves allies and emboldens assassins, it also occasionally produces shocking victories, purely by accident, of course. Ethiopian Roots: This man is Ethiopian, and proud of it. Coming from a land of rugged highlands, he knows a thing or two about surviving in tough terrains, whether it’s mountains or rival armies.

True Ethiopian: He’s as Ethiopian as injera and strong enough to farm under the sweltering sun. A true son of the land, he’s got the grit to bring in a harvest and the wisdom to know when the Nile’s about to flood, just don’t ask him to dig irrigation ditches himself.

Respected Ethiopian: Among Ethiopians, this man’s word is law, and his crops grow just by looking at them. Known for his commanding presence and his ability to survive in battle as well as in the fields. His land grows greener, and children multiply, probably because of all the farming...

Eurypontid Dynasty

Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · pulls against Agiad Dynasty · never on 14 of the cultures.

Effects: no stat effects

Sparta was unusual among Greek city-states in that it maintained its kingship past the Archaic age. It was even more unusual in that it had two kings simultaneously, coming from two separate lines. According to tradition, the two lines, the Agiads and Eurypontids, were respectively descended from the twins Eurysthenes and Procles, the descendants of Heracles who supposedly conquered Sparta two generations after the Trojan War. The Agiad line was regarded as being senior to the Eurypontid line. Although there are lists of the earlier purported Kings of Sparta, there is little evidence for the existence of any kings before the middle of the 6th century BC or so. Spartan kings received a recurring posthumous hero cult like that of the Dorian kings of Cyrene.
