What the game says at each level

Ugly, Ignorant Wife: This man’s wife isn’t exactly the centre of attention, and her grasp on intelligent conversation is as bad as her looks. Her most useful talent? Probably staying out of sight. Perhaps her father is a man of some influence, or perhaps she holds other merits, but whatever it is, her husband should probably keep her hidden behind closed doors, far away from social events.

Ugly Wife: This man’s wife won’t be winning any beauty contests, possibly due to some disease during childhood. Their children might need more than just good luck to avoid inheriting bad genes.

Ugly, Intelligent Wife: This man's wife may not be pretty nor healthy, but at least she is smart and fully devoted to her husband. Even from her sickbed, she may still be able to give him sound advice and benefit his career. She’s got the brains to make up for what the mirror doesn't find.

Adorable, Naive Wife: This man's wife may not be the smartest around, but she is charming and fertile and her husband is delighted with her. Who needs a house full of bookworms when you can raise a clan of mighty heroes?

Lovely Wife: This man's wife is healthy and their kids are the kind of strong, healthy offspring every family dreams of. Truly, this man is blessed with a wife who is an ornament to his household and his public image.

Charming, Intelligent Wife: This man’s wife is the whole package: beautiful, intelligent, and everyone adores her. She’s not just smart and charming, but also gives good advice. The kind of woman who makes her husband look good in every possible way.

Tedious Wife: Every time his wife speaks, you die a little. A wise man ignores the foolish advice of his wife, but not all men are wise...

Intelligent Wife: This man’s wife is sharp and always ready with good advice. A wise man knows to listen when she speaks, because her counsel could be the difference between success and disaster.

What the game says at each level

Unwilling to Learn: Books? Ha! This man spent his youth running from tutors like Odysseus from the Cyclops. Learning is not part of his favourite pastimes. Even when he can get himself motivated to try, his stubbornness generally gets in the way.

Practical: This man frowns upon the scholastic approach to learning, preferring to educate himself in practical matters through direct means. While he may not be as cultured as some of his fellows, he does possess a wealth of useful knowledge and skills.

Avoids Knowledge like the Plague: This man avoids learning things like he does to the plague, lest he be corrupted by it.

Uses Healing Water

Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · at most 5 characters may hold it · never on 15 of the cultures.

Effects: +1 Hit Points

This man has discovered that the water of the Kydnos river, when taken from Tarsos, can heal the swollen sinews of both men and cattle. Some of the famous Tarsian philosophers think he is a great mind, while others have accused him of naive superstition. But it is true that the stream of the Kydnos passes through a deep ravine before emptying into the city, so that the water it is discharging is cold and swift, giving it exceptional qualities.

Effects: +3 Public Security, +1 Troop Morale

'Apollon the bright, the far-shooter.' - 'His children Asklepios and Linos'. This general's watchwords are complicated and ever-changing, with his men often struggling to even keep them straight, sometimes almost to the point of injury. Do they lift their caps when replying, or was it putting their spear on the ground? Or was that for the day before? Regardless, they appreciate the increased security provided against any enemy ruses.

Uses Weak Watchwords

Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · pulls against Uses Strong Watchwords, Uses Good Watchwords, No Watchwords, Forgets Watchwords · at most 10 characters may hold it.

Effects: -1 Public Security

This man's watchwords are simple and easily guessed. Hunters call out 'Artemis', messengers 'Hermes'. Not very ingenious. It makes his troops susceptible to enemy ruses, though they are easier to remember, which will be appreciated by the rank-and-file until that weakness is at some point paid with blood.
