Many will mourn the actions fulfilled by this commander and whispers of his cruelty abound! He has sacked the city of our old allies like Aelymas who stood at our side when Agathocles ravaged our land. This man’s destructive campaign against our allies, however uncertain they may have sometimes been, will cause mistrust among the Mashliyim and enemies alike and anger the local Libyan populations.

What the game says at each level
Sarissa Sitter: This man discovered persoanlly that standing too close to a Makedonian phalanx is a quick way to meet the gods, or at least brush shoulders with them. The sarissa, the famed long spear of the phalanx, left its mark on him, literally. While his comrades fought on, he found himself involuntarily wounded and reflecting on the poor life choices that led him to face a wall of spears. Now, he has a permanent limp and a new appreciation for long-range combat.
Sarissa Enjoyer: Poke me once, shame on you, poke me twice, shame on me! - This man has evaded death in front of a phalanx a second time. He now holds a peculiar place in history: a man so unlucky he keeps getting into these situations, yet so lucky he survived every time.

| Indifferent/Balanced | 7 | no stat effects | Egotistical/Depressed | 8 | -1 Troop Morale, +5 Tax Collection, -1 Influence | Magnanimous/Boundless Optimist | 9 | +1 Influence, -1 Unrest |
What the game says at each level
Selfish/Pessimistic: What can be said about a man such as this? Perhaps his ability or his indispensability outweighs these disadvantages of selfishness and pessimism. He is more likely to use others for personal gain than to offer them help, and should be carefully watched for signs of treachery or corruption. This is not a bad way to behave, in his opinion. Everyone in this world is either exploiting others or is the one being exploited, and he doesn't want to be the former. He is also not one to take setbacks or failure lightly.
Selfish/Optimistic: This man is sure that things will turn out right, and that luck is on his side. He does what he wants, believing he is on the right side of things. He may not be actively seeking to hurt others by his actions, but his carefree nature tends to result in him disregarding the feelings of others, or his prior engagements.
Considerate/Pessimistic: This man cares about others and maybe even worries about them. He knows that the world is a cruel and unforgiving place, and that the strong and powerful are obligated to protect and assist the weak. He respects those who hold to these principles.
Kind/Optimistic: This man's generosity knows no bounds. He believes people are basically good. He's the type of person who believes in doing what's right, no matter what, and he has the confidence that everything will end well. Needless to say, compassion isn't good for collecting taxes or sending men to their deaths.
Individualistic/Optimistic: This general’s laughter is as infectious as his schemes are devious. He sees the world as one great joke, with himself as the one that makes others laugh, or, more often, the one delivering the joke. His optimistic nature shields him from the consequences of his actions, which makes him both loved and hated by those who serve under him.
Friendly/Grounded: This man is the guy you want to have a drink with after a long day. He’s down-to-earth, pragmatic, and always has a kind word to say. He knows that life has its ups and downs and isn’t shy about facing them head-on. His grounded attitude makes him a solid leader, and while he’s not one to lead any major reforms, he’s the kind of leader who’ll make sure everyone’s content with the way things are.
Indifferent/Balanced: This man has a good laid-back attitude, and he’s pretty sure everything will work out in the end, probably. His approach to life is all about balance, making him equally likely to shrug off a victory as he would a defeat. While his calm attitude keeps things from getting too chaotic, it also means he might not be the most reliable when it comes to making tough decisions.
Egotistical/Depressed: This man’s soul is clouded in a fog of melancholy, forever expecting doom to fall upon him. Though he carries an air of superiority, his never ending pessimism repels those around him, leaving him isolated in his own misery. His dismal outlook tempts him toward immoral acts, and he often drowns his sorrows in vices, from wine to deceit.
Magnanimous/Boundless Optimist: This man's heart is practically overflowing with good intentions and belief that everything will turn out fine. He’s the kind of leader who will charge into battle with a smile, convinced that a good attitude will win the day. While his optimism is contagious, it can also lead to some questionable decisions, so be ready for the occasional brilliant success or, you know, complete disaster.

Semi-Native Conqueror
Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · never on 13 of the cultures.
Effects: +1 Management, -1 Influence
Born of invaders but raised among the conquered, this man has become part of the locals. His blood still carries the ferocity of his ancestors, but his habits increasingly align with local customs, sometimes to the point where even he wonders if he should be eating olives instead of roasting entire boars. His people have married local men and women, their children now bear names that combine both cultures, and their feasts mix barbarian wildness with local traditions. The locals remain cautious, offering guarded smiles and shared toasts at feasts, but the blending of traditions has its perks: new allies, exotic recipes, and a decidedly interesting accent when they talk.

Senator
Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · pulls against Imperator Caesar · never on 21 of the cultures. Once it reaches Senator it cannot drop back.
Effects: +1 Influence
As a member of the Roman Senate, this man is one of the most powerful and influential figures in the Republic. The Senate wields enormous power and influence in the Roman Republic, having sole charge of the distribution of public money from the treasury. A magistrate, no matter how influential, must take into heavy consideration any senatus consultum. These decree's are seen as 'advice', but it is very risky to dare ignore the will of the Senate.

Senatorial Class
Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · never on 21 of the cultures.
Effects: no stat effects
This man is part of Rome’s prestigious senatorial class, a rank reserved for those with a wealth exceeding one million sestertii. While wealth alone does not guarantee a seat in the Senate, it ensures access to Rome’s upper echelons of power. The senatorial class controls vast estates, commands legions, and shapes the destiny of the Republic. For them, public service is their birthright and duty.

What the game says at each level
Small Client Network: This man's influence extends no further than a small number of loyal clients, few in number but dependable in their allegiance. Despite his efforts, his renown remains confined to the shadows of greater men. Clients are the loyal supporters of prominent Roman families, standing by their patron in all ventures, whether in war or politics. In return, the Patronus protects and represents their political interests in the Senate or through the office he held, sometimes even defending them in court.
Medium Client Network: This man’s influence has begun to grow, and with it, his network of clients, though he remains well aware that ambition can quickly turn allies into rivals. No longer merely an observer in the halls of power, he can now form his own personal guard, if necessary, and can push for higher political offices, knowing that he has the support of many.
Large Client Network: This man’s influence has grow significantly, and with it, his network of clients. While he remains well aware that ambition can quickly turn allies into rivals, he can now form his own personal guard and push for higher political offices, knowing that he has a large base of supporters.
Vast Client Network: With the acquisition of wealth comes power, and this man has expanded his client network to impressive proportions. Commanding enough loyalty among supporters to influence major decisions and bend the Senate in his favour, he is fast becoming one of the major players in Rome’s political chess game, though his influence must be carefully maintained if he wishes to avoid falling prey to the ambitions of others.
Huge Client Network: One of the most influential persons in the Republic, this man has the support and loyalty of entire cities. He is a dangerous person to oppose, but a great ally to have! However, with such power comes danger, for the more influence one has, the more enemies one attracts. This man must be careful, for his alliances are both his greatest asset and his most precarious liability.

What the game says at each level
Small Estate: This man owns a small estate, reflecting the size of his wealth. A handful of slaves and freedmen work for him. Over the years, much of the land in Italy has become massive estates owned by those of senatorial status. Only a few men who are not of that status hold insignificant portions of land, forcing many poorer citizens into the urbanised areas to make a living since small farming has become unprofitable for them.\nThe main crops produced on these estates are grapes and olives, with wine and olive oil being the main exports from Italy.
Medium Estate: This man owns a medium estate, reflecting the size of his wealth. The income from his land is growing, and he owns dozens of slaves to work the land. While his estates grow, so too does resentment among the people, who labour under heavy burdens and see the elite monopolize the land. This reduces opportunities for commoners, decreasing population growth and public order.
Large Estate: This man owns a large estate, reflecting the size of his wealth. The income from his land is great, and he owns hundreds of slaves to work the land. However, large estates lead to depopulation of rural areas as the land is hoarded by the wealthy.
Vast Estate: This man owns one of the largest estates and it is a source of fierce pride. Thousands of slaves plant and harvest crops that bring him enormous profit. He is respected and envied for this great estates that now stretch as far as the eye can see, along with the misery of the people who work them. He’s grown fat on the backs of the poor, and the more he gains, the louder the discontent from the starving masses.

What the game says at each level
Social Drinker: Always first to celebrate after a hard day of conquest, he likes to spend time raising a cup (or several) with his men. It has some benefits.
Likes a Drink: A good general must not be afraid to drink freely after a victory, or loss, or draw. This man is a dedicated drinker, and any benefits to his working relationships are outweighed by the constant hangovers.
Drunkard: By the time the sun reaches its zenith, this man is often found falling from his saddle, more drunk than inspired. His duties have become mere distractions from his true passion, his next drink.
Drunken Lout: This man’s affinity for the bottle has taken a darker turn. Now an abusive drunkard, he waves his arms and insults with equal fervor, his drunken rants more feared than his battle orders.
Sot: This man’s drinking habit has reached such depths that he often ends the night in his own filth. Those unfortunate enough to know him can’t decide whether to pity or despise him.
Paralytic: Even the Gods of wine would find this man's drinking habits disturbing. His capacity is bottomless, his waking moments are few and dominated by an insatiable thirst.

What the game says at each level
Socially Awkward: This man may be able to command an army, but put him in a social setting, and he starts repeating himself or making unusual pauses too many times. Whether it's making bizarre small talk or mistaking a noble’s wife for a servant, his social blunders are something funny to watch. Some fear that one day, he’ll accidentally insult a diplomat and start a war.
Socially Distant: This man takes no pleasure in idle conversation, preferring to keep his distance from the trivial concerns of lesser mortals. He has better things to do with his valuable time.
Unapproachable: This man goes out of his way to avoid any form of social engagement, retreating to his private chambers at the first opportunity. His isolation has become famous, with some even doubting if he remembers how to speak.

Son of Two Worlds
Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · sons inherit it 1% of the time · never on 13 of the cultures.
Effects: +1 Management, +1 Influence
The great-grandson of conquerors, this man knows his ancestors' saga only through tales told at banquets, stories as distant as Homer's epics. He was raised entirely within the civilized traditions of this land: educated in rhetoric and philosophy, versed in local law, fluent in their language. The locals still remember those fierce warriors who once arrived as invaders, but he himself is indistinguishable from the native aristocracy.

What the game says at each level
Spartan Agoge - Training: This man is undergoing Agoge training and won't enter military service until the age of 20.\n\nThe agoge was the rigorous education and training regimen mandated for all male Spartan citizens, except for the firstborn son in the ruling houses, Eurypontid and Agiad. The training involved learning stealth, cultivating loyalty to one's group, military training (e.g. pain tolerance), hunting, dancing, singing, and social preparation. The word "agoge" had in ancient Greek many meanings, among them seizure or abduction, but in this context generally meant leading, guidance or training.\nAccording to folklore, agoge was introduced by the semi-mythical Spartan law-giver Lycurgus but its origins are thought to be between the 7th and 6th centuries BC when the state trained male citizens from the ages of seven to twenty-one.\nThe aim of the system was to produce physically and morally strong males to serve in the Spartan army. It encouraged conformity and the importance of the Spartan state over one's personal interest and generated the future elites of Sparta. The men would become the "walls of Sparta" because Sparta was the only Greek city with no defensive walls after they had been demolished at the order of Lycurgus. Discipline was strict and the males were encouraged to fight amongst themselves to determine the strongest member of the group.\nThe agoge was prestigious throughout the Greek world, and many aristocratic families from other cities vied to send their sons to Sparta to participate in the agoge for varying periods of time. The Spartans were very selective in which young men they would permit to enroll. Such honours were usually awarded to the proxenoi of Sparta in other cities and to a few other families of supreme ancestry and importance.
Spartan Agoge - Training: While still undergoing the Agoge training until the age of 30, this man is now eligible for military service and can vote.
Spartan Agoge - Graduated: This character has graduated from the Agoge and is now considered a full citizen of Sparta.

Spartiates
Appears on every character, agents included · pulls against Perioikos, Neodamodeis · never on 17 of the cultures. Once it reaches Spartiates it cannot drop back.
Effects: +1 Command · grants the epithet of Sparta
The Spartiates, or Homoioi ("those who are alike") were the males of Sparta known to the spartans as "peers" or "men of equal status". From a young age, male Spartiates were trained for battle and put through grueling challenges intended to craft them into fearless warriors. In battle, they had the reputation of being the best soldiers in Greece, and the strength of Sparta's hoplite forces let the city become the dominant state in Greece throughout most of the Hellenic period. No other City-state would dare to attack Sparta even though it only could muster a force of about 8000 Spartiates during the zenith of its dominance. Spartiates were absolutely debarred by law from trade or manufacture, which consequently rested in the hands of the perioikoi, and were forbidden to possess either gold or silver, the currency consisting of bars of iron: but there can be no doubt that this prohibitian was evaded in various ways.

Sphairopoios: The name means, literally, 'sphere maker'. This man occupies his spare time creating astronomical devices called 'heavenly spheres', or hydraulically powered devices for measuring time.
Advanced Sphairopoios: This man advanced in his tinkering to the point where he experiments with devices such as the Advanced Antikythera Mechanism (as reported by Scipio). Or, devices such as one mentioned in Cicero's 'De re publica', a 1st century BC philosophical dialogue mentioning two machines that some believe are some kind of planetarium, predicting the movements of the sun, moon, and the five known planets at the time. They were considered to have been made by Archimedes. It was said that when Gallus moved this globe, it showed the relationship of the moon with the sun, and there were exactly the same number of turns on the bronze device as the number of days in the real globe of the sky.....

Spoils collected on the battlefield after an engagement, or found in a captured town are used to decorate the temples of the gods, triumphal arches, porticoes, and other places of public resort, and sometimes serve to arm the people in the hour of extreme need, but those which are gained by individual prowess are considered the undoubted property of the successful combatant, and are exhibited in the most conspicuous part of his dwelling, being hung up in the atrium, suspended from the door-posts, or arranged in the vestibulum, with appropriate inscriptions.

What the game says at each level
Starving to Death: Entirely out of food, this general’s troops are hungry, sick, and utterly miserable. Grass, leather, and anything that doesn’t bite back might be on the menu. If they aren’t resupplied soon, they may find an early grave, or each other.
Starving: This general and his army are almost out of supplies and have resorted to eating anything remotely edible, including the occasional stick or suspicious-looking mushroom. Many men are malnourished, some to the point of sickness. Talks about mutiny fill the camp.
Belts Tightened: This general and his army are running low on quite a few crucial supplies and there are no fat men under his command any more. There are grumblings in camp about the general's competence to lead and a few pack mules have gone missing.
Rationing: This general and his army are rationing their food a bit, due to shortages. The men have heard "Keep a stiff upper lip" quite a few times by now, and have begun to get sick of it.
Low Supplies: This general and his army are low on supplies, either due to being away from their home territory, through the lack of available forage, or because of the general's bad logistical ability.
Moderately Supplied: With enough provisions to hold on for a while, this man and his army are still able to enjoy the luxury of having their stomach full and feeling satisfied while they march, with only minor complaints over the lack of wine.
Well Supplied: This general and his army are well-supplied, due to being in his home territory, through the availability of forage, or because of the general's own logistical ability.
Fully Supplied: This man’s army is living the good life. The supply lines are flowing without issues, and there’s no shortage of food or drink.

Struggling City: The city and its finances are struggling under the burden of maintaining such a large garrison, leading to declining public satisfaction and economic difficulties. Cities often struggle under the heavy costs of maintaining large garrisons, especially in regions far from the heartlands.
Collapsing City: The local economy is collapsing under the strain of maintaining such a large military garrison, diverting resources away from civilian needs. The burden of military upkeep causes public dissatisfaction, with the citizens now asking if maybe, just maybe, their taxes could go to things like food and not just the army.

What the game says at each level
Struggling for Legitimacy: This man has taken the reins of leadership, but everyone is still wondering if he’s more likely to lead them to victory or into a swamp. Does he have the necessary skills and resilience to steer his people through turbulent times? That is yet to be seen.
Established Legitimacy: Through effort and determination, this leader has managed to stay in charge longer than anyone expected. He won battles, signed treaties, and managed not to trip over his own feet in public.
Confident Leader: This man now walks with the confidence of someone who knows where he’s going, even if he’s still making it up as he goes along.
Undisputed Leader: This leader has firmly entrencheded himself at the top, like a boulder no one dares to move. Even his enemies hesitate before questioning his authority, and his friends just nod along wisely.
Supreme Leader: Having reached the peak of power, this man is now the undisputed ruler, judge, jury, and likely executioner if things don’t go his way. His people follow his every command, mostly because they don’t have much of a choice.
Great Leader: With a name that echoes through history, this leader’s achievements have outgrown even the tallest statues built in his honour. The kind of leader whose speeches make you feel inspired, right before sending you off to war.
Living Legend: Like the heroes of old, this man towers above mortal men. He's practically a living deity. His every word is gospel, his every action heroic. Some say he’s been touched by the gods themselves and he doesn't deny it either.

Struggling with the Locals

Effects: +2 Unrest, -1 Influence
This man has arrived with dreams of dominion, but the local nobility is having none of it. Instead of a great kingly dwelling where people move to ask for his favours, he’s struggling to manage alliances with local chiefs, tribal elders, and every chieftain who claims a hut as his palace. Governing this province has become a bit chaotic, with every minor lord believing that he’s the centre of the universe, and this poor governor is left trying to sew it all together, without poking himself with the needle.

Effects: +1 Hit Points
This man was once stung by a scorpion and ever since every other pain has seemed negligible to him. Alabanda in Caria is swarmed with scorpions, and since the city is situated at the foot of two hills in a particular way, Apollonios Malakos (around 120 BC) called his hometown "an ass laden with panniers of scorpions". In fact, Alabanda, Mylasa and all the surrounding mountains are full of scorpions, but the Carians have learned to live with them and the animal even appears on coins of Mylasa.

Effects: +1 Troop Morale
Though this man's frequent swims through the waters of the Nile, even in those most frequented by crocodiles, might impress onlookers and give him a greater reputation for bravery with his soldiers, it does reveal a certain recklessness of character.

Synedrion
Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · never on 16 of the cultures.
Effects: +1 Law
This man is a member of this city's Synedrion. Synedrion is a Greek word for an assembly that holds formal sessions. The supreme body of Alexander the Great's empire was called "Synedrion". The Council was a small group formed among some of the most eminent Macedonians, chosen by the king to assist him in the government of the kingdom. As such it was not a representative assembly, but nevertheless, on certain occasions it could be expanded with the admission of representatives of the cities and of the civic corps of the kingdom. The Council primarily exerted a probouleutic function with respect to the Assembly: it prepared and proposed the decisions which the Assembly would have discussed and voted, working in many fields such as the designation of kings and regents, high administrators and declarations of war. It was also the first and the last authority for all the cases which did not involve capital punishment. Inside the Council ruled the democratic principles of isegoria (equality of word) and of parrhesia (freedom of speech), to which the king subjects himself like the other members.\n\nAfter the removal of the Antigonid dynasty by the Romans in 167 BC, it is possible that the synedrion remained, unlike the Assembly, representing the sole federal authority in Macedonia after the country's division in four merides.
