Decurion (Roman Imperial Decurion)

Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · never on 21 of the cultures.

Effects: +10 Tax Collection, +1 Unrest, -1 Squalor

Drawn from the curiales class, which consists of the wealthy middle class citizens of a town society, Decurions are members of a city senate in the Roman Empire, and the most powerful political figures at the local level, being responsible for public contracts, religious rituals, entertainment, and ensuring order. Perhaps most importantly to the imperial government, they also supervise local tax collection. Early in the imperial period, aristocratic citizens actively sought the post as a mark of prestige, as they would gain seats in the front row of the theatre and be accepted into the class of honestiores (honourable men). Once elected, they are expected to pay large sums of their own money to perform public works; decurions typically compete with each other to furnish the community with temples, baths and other public facilities.

What the game says at each level

Dedicated Trainer: With a strong belief in the importance of ‘getting the basics right,’ this man focuses on simple maneuvers and formations under his supervision.

Obsessional Trainer: This man believes that the sweat of training saves the blood of battle. His strictness is seen as an unwelcome necessity.

Drillmaster: From dawn's first light to the moment stars claim the skies, this man likes to drill his troops incessantly. This drive for efficiency is not entirely popular, but it works.

Martinet: Iron discipline is the measure of this man's command. He often says that those generals who are severe and strict in the observance of law are serviceable to their own men, while those who are easy-going and bountiful are useful only to the enemy. The soldiers of the latter, he says, might be joyous but insubordinate, while the others, although downcast, are obedient and ready for all emergencies.

While this man has successfully passed his rites of passage and no one thinks that he is afraid to meet his death in battle, or that he does not follow the standard of the agnostic values of his people, his dedication to these values is not as admirable as that of some better men who stand out for their great courage and power. Still, he is treated as a fully respectable adult and warrior-aristocrat in his society.

Denied Triumph

Appears on family members (generals, governors, leaders) · pulls against Imperator · never on 21 of the cultures.

Effects: -1 Influence

Despite his victories and the glory that this general brought to Rome, the Senate has denied him the honour of a triumph, citing dubious reasons. What greater shame exists than to be denied the laurel crown before Jupiter's temple when one's deeds merit such recognition? The gods themselves must wonder at such ingratitude toward one who has expanded Rome's dominion. His bitterness grows with each campaign season, as well as his belief that armies should follow the general who leads them to victory, not the senators who deny him his deserved glory.

What the game says at each level

Discontent: This man’s dissatisfaction with leadership is written all over his face.

Dismayed: Disappointed and disillusioned, this man is thoroughly fed up with leadership. Like me at my full-time job, he’s long past caring, but he still sighs deeply whenever the rulers make another misstep.

Disdainful: Constantly rolling his eyes at every decision, this man oozes contempt for the current ruler. His disdain is so palpable, even the birds seem to avoid him.

Hateful: This man wakes up every morning already thinking about how much he despises the current leadership. Just thinking about it sends him into a furious rage that ruins his entire day.

What the game says at each level

Disgraced Family: While this man's wife comes from a once-proud lineage, their glory days are long past... Her family name is still remembered in old histories, but their estates are ruined, and their political connections have almost faded. Not a good help if he wants to pursue a better political career.

Powerful Family: This man’s wife comes from a very wealthy family that holds some power and influence in their society, with connections that can help augmenting her husband's career and increase his chances in running for public offices or military commands.

Impoverished Noble Family: This man’s wife comes from a former powerful noble family who once rose to the top and exerted great influence in their society. They may not have the influence they once had, but their lineage is still respected: it can still help augmenting her husband's career and increase his chances in running for public or military offices.

Noble Family: This man’s wife comes from a wealthy aristocratic family who sits at the top of the social pyramid and exerts great influence and power. Through private dealings they can help augmenting her husband's career and increase his chances in running for public or military offices, as long as he doesn’t embarrass himself.

Powerful Noble Family: This man’s wife comes from a very powerful and wealthy noble family that has remained at the top of society and politics for many generations. They regard themselves as part of the elite and hold great pride in having the most important political, religious and military positions being granted to them. With all her family connections and influence, this General only needs to ensure that he does not screw up the chances he gets.

Mutinuous Garrison: The dissatisfaction within the garrison has reached a critical point, with the troops openly questioning the governor's authority. What the game says at each level

Dull/Uncharismatic/Languorous: This man's lack of natural ability makes him unlikely to become great or renowned in his society, but he may yet make a fine subordinate to a greater general, or even a governor of some distant land. But who knows the future? He may rise above his inborn limitations to great glory, and honour. Some men make up for their weaknesses with strengths such as courage, steadfastness, or loyalty. Others become hopeless failure, forgotten, if lucky, and hated, if unfortunate.

Dull/Uninspiring/Vigorous: This man's lack of innate intellectual capability or social skills means that he must make the best use of his drive and passion to overcome his weaknesses. Through study or practice, he may become better than someone with inborn ability. He might make a great general who leads his men from the front, rather than giving orders from the rear. Or he might turn his energy to darker deeds or more useless pursuits.

Ignorant/Charismatic/Spiritless: This man's lack of innate intellectual capability, health and drive means that he must get what he wants through his influence over others. Men like this may inspire or entice with their words, and can accomplish much with little physical action. He might not make a great governor but he won't be one of the worst. He may become an inspiring general. Or maybe not.

Ignorant/Charismatic/Vigorous: This man's low intellectual ability is somewhat compensated for by his social skills and his vitality. There is such a thing as being too smart for one's own good, and this man knows how to behave around others. He may not make a great tactician or math genius, but hard work and the right connections can carry one far in life.

Sharp/Uncharismatic/Spiritless: This man's intelligence is offset by poor social skills and vitality. This type of man may be bookish or reserved, and might be best suited for tasks that do not require teamwork or great athleticism. He could still make a great general, through tactical genius or careful planning. He could become an able administrator, double-checking his budgets and figures to eliminate waste or corruption.

Astute/Uninspiring/Vigorous: This man's low social skills make him ill-suited for public speaking or politics. But his intelligence and vitality could be put to use as a wily general or efficient governor. He might not be the most inspiring leader, but men are better served by an able leader than a flashy one.

Intelligent/Charismatic/Spiritless: This man has the intelligence and charisma, but may lack the will that leads to the full application of these innate abilities. He may not be lazy, per se--He could be of poor health. But one way or another, this man's weak life force will hinder him in his life.

Bright/Magnetic/Vigorous: There are few men who excel in all they do. This man may be one of those few. At least, he lacks any glaring weakness in his intellect, charisma, or vitality. This gives him a head start, but it does not mean he has already won the race.
